Today we are taking the vocab test at the beginning of class, then heading to the Math Lab. You have the rest of the period to work on your research project. Use the breakdown guide I provided earlier to guide your work. Pick a few letters to work on, and then cross them off as you go along. Then, pick a few more to focus on. Do NOT try to tackle the whole project at once. Focus on a few parts at a time--NOT the whole.

Quiz over chapters 1 and 2 today!
You do NOT have to read any new chapters in the book for tomorrow. :-) You do need to re-read the last part of chapter 2, pages 35-41. Then, answer the following: •The very first time I read this novel, I reached the part of the story where Connie said to kill Mike, and I honestly thought I had misread something. I went back and skimmed the passage again. Yup—that’s what she said. After going out of his way to help a stranger in need, that’s the thanks Mike got. He was a nice guy and was nearly beaten to death. I think what Connie did was horribly wrong. However, after a bit of pondering, I began to understand it. I never agreed with it—but I did understand it. So, here’s your task: Do some pondering of your own, then explain on paper why you think Connie had an innocent, nice guy beaten severely. Make specific references to the text. This is no empty opinion to ramble on with. It’s an analysis grounded in the text of the book. Write a solid paragraph. What was going on inside her that prompted her actions? Was it personal? Had it been a set-up or just something she did on a whim? What fueled her decision to do this to Mike? Do you think she later regretted what she did to Mike, or do you think she’d do it over again if given the chance? (Those are the kinds of things you need to be pondering…) ½ page minimum Make sure to read chapters 1 and 2 in That Was Then, This Is Now for TOMORROW! We will have a quiz at the beginning of the period.
The attached .ppt file has info regarding the Junior Research Project:
For tomorrow, do this:
Here is a collection of items each class listed many, many weeks ago about things that can keep people from being successful in life. Write it on one sheet of paper. Add three more things that did not make this list but could/should have, in your opinion. Bad School Habits Unhealthy Friendships Substance Abuse Having Baby Too Young Laziness Bad Attitude Procrastination Unrealistic Goals Poor Planning Debt Sickness / Injury Family Incident/Situations Lack of Education Poor Job/Career Choice Lack of Motivation No Family Encouragement/Support/Guidance Lack of Resources Poor Time Management Bad Habits Lack of Self-Discipline From the list, which of the things listed do you think most commonly get in the way of people reaching their goals in life? Pick three and circle them. 1.Make two columns on your paper: Things Under Our Control, and Things Beyond Our Control. Now, take everything from the board and put under the appropriate heading. Today you are given a little more time to research and print some information for your 1960s mobile. Remember, your mobile can NOT simply be cards hanging from a coat hanger. (Or a single stick/rod, etc.) Review the PowerPoint from Friday to be clear on the project. These are due this Wednesday! Also, today you need to complete the attached vocabulary sheet. This is due at the beginning of class tomorrow. Quiz on Wednesday over these words!
As announced at the beginning of the school year, you are required to purchase one paperback novel this semester. This will be for our last novel reading of the school year. The title of the book you need to purchase is Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. You must have this book and bring it to class on May 20th. The libraries have limited copies, but that is a possibility for a few quick students. Barnes and Noble sells copies for $8 or $9, but you can also order a cheaper copy from their web site. The Half Price Book Store in town may or may not have copies of this book. This web site lists used books for sale, and several copies of the novel can be picked up for less than $4, shipped. I have had good luck with them before. eBay also offers an opportunity to buy cheap, used copies of the novel. If you are unable to order online because of not having access to a credit card, speak to Mr. Tucker before May 9 and he can order one for you, after you give him the cash to cover the cost of the book.
Obviously, if you wait until the last minute to look for a copy, you may not be able to find one locally. If you wait too late to order a copy online, it will not have time to be delivered to your mailbox. You were notified way back in August that you would need to purchase one paperback after spring break. Copies can be found for less than $5, so no one has an excuse to not have been able to save $5 over the past eight months. You have a full month to purchase/order the book from this notification, so time is not a valid excuse either to not have a copy on the 20th. Not having a copy of the book for whatever reason does not excuse you from work and quizzes we do in class. This is your responsibility. Anyone can save $5 over eight month's time, and there are several different options to obtain a cheap, used copy. If ordering a used copy, do so in the next week and check this off your must-do list now. :-)
Today you have the period to complete Monday and Tuesday's assignments.
