Back to GRAMMAR Today! WOOT!!! Today we started a new parts of speech packet, this time focusing on VERBS. If you missed class, attached below is the packet. Print and complete the first 2 1/4 pages of it for tomorrow. NOTICE: We are about to start using Microsoft OneNote again. If you were one of the slackers who never set yours up, you are about to start getting zeros again. Get on it! ![]()
Today is test day over Huck Finn. If you spent some time preparing last night using the study resources I provided, you should ace the test.
Also, due by the end of the period is your B.O.E. letter! If you missed today, then you missed our review game. Never fear--it is posted HERE! (Hey, that rhymed.) ![]()
And here is an old version of a Huck Finn test to help you some: ![]()
BRING A PENCIL TOMORROW!!!!!
If you missed Monday, complete the following:
1. What did you think about the ending of the novel? Did it end the way you thought it was “supposed to”? Explain why or why not. What might you have done differently had you written the last chapters of the book? 2. What do you think about Tom knowing all along that Jim was free and not telling anyone? Why did Tom do this? What does this reveal about Tom? 3. How do you feel about Jim knowing all along that pap was dead? Does it change your overall opinion of him? Why did Jim keep this secret and not tell Huck when they found the body? Should Huck feel betrayed by Jim keeping this from him? 4. Obviously, this book wasn’t written to make a statement about slavery. What, however, do you think it was intended to say to readers? And for Wednesday: A parent has filed a formal complaint with the Bowling Green City Schools Board of Education, citing that the novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn should not be assigned to students because of its racist content. The matter is to be discussed in an open forum during the Board’s next meeting. Mr. Tinius has asked that any students who have read the book write a letter to the Board of Education and share their opinions about the book in regard to the allegations made by the parent. Your task, then, is to write a formal letter to the BOE in which you take a definitive stand that either A) supports the argument that Huck Finn is indeed a book that is racist and harmful/hurtful for some of BGHS’s student population, or B) defends the book by arguing that it is not racist and is actually quite the opposite. Whichever stance you take, you must offer your opinion of what the official Board policy should be regarding the book. Today you have the entire class period to read the last section of Huck Finn. A copy of that packet is attached below in case you miss or lose yours over the weekend. As always, the MP3 files are posted HERE. ![]()
You have two essays to write for Monday. Below are your three options. Pick the two you feel most comfortable writing about, and develop a well written essay for each. These must be developed. I will not be giving any "participation" points for this assignment. If your essays are simple, flat, and underdeveloped, you will get a low score. These can be typed or handwritten, but if I cannot read your handwriting, I will not grade your paper. Here are your choices:
Choose two of the following: A1- Greed is an element that arises several times throughout the book. Why do you think Twain brings it out on more than one occasion? (What significance might it have to the overall theme of the book?) Discuss four characters who are examples of greed in the book? What observation do you think Twain is making about greed and humanity? How do these characters fit into a larger theme of the book? A2- How does Huckleberry develop as a character during the course of this novel? Would you say he undergoes a radical change or a mild one, and why? Then, discuss the internal conflict that occurs in Huck throughout much of the book in regards to helping Jim reach freedom. What does this reveal about Southern culture/society of the period, and what does the internal struggle reveal about Huckleberry as an individual? (Be sure and cite some specific examples from the text.) What does the contrast between Huck and Tom in the closing chapters of the book reveal about Huckleberry? A3- Discuss the development of Jim as a character. How is he portrayed in the opening chapters of the novel, and is there any difference in how readers see him in the latter sections of the book? (If so, how?) How does his character evolve as the novel continues? What do we learn about him during Huck’s time with him? How might Jim help Huck’s character development in the novel? Do you think Twain’s ending to the book negates or strengthens Jim’s character development? We are reading chapters 29 and 30 in class today. Well, actually, we are reading a summary of chapter 30, so that should be good news. You have a packet of chapter 31 to complete as homework. If you are not in class today, both are attached below. As always, the MP3 files are in the same location they have been for the past two months. ![]()

Tomorrow you will get the last section of the book. This will be due on Friday, which is when we said the book would be finished, so we are on track. If you know that you are going to be absent tomorrow, as for that packet TODAY before you leave.
Today we are reading chapters 27 & 28 in class, along with a quiz over the two. If you miss today, see me for a packet when you return.
Today we spend a little time discussing our packet work from yesterday. Then you get a copy of chapters 27-28 of Huck Finn. You will have a quiz over these two chapters on Monday. We have a few chapters that we are skipping after that, some more that we are reading, and the book will be finished by the end of next week. Woot!
As always, the MP3 files are in the online folder I shared with you. Today we are in small groups working on a packet. If you are not in class today, see Mr. Tucker when you return to get a copy of the packet. You will have to complete it alone.
