Using the video found HERE, answer the questions on the attached sheet. Then, read Chapter 24 for tomorrow.
Answer the following: 1.In the decade preceding the Civil War, how many slaves do you think lived in the United States? 2.At that time, what percentage of Americans do you think owned slaves? 3.How many free blacks do you think owned slaves in America? 4.In your opinion, what percentage of white Americans, in the years before the Civil War, were opposed to slavery? 5.What are three reason you think can explain why slavery existed so long in this country if common sense tells us it is wrong to treat people that way? 6.Although slavery was abolished in this country well over a century ago, is slavery still present in the world today? Explain why you think so or not. If so, how common is it? Then, add three questions that ask asnything specific you have wondered about the history of slavery in this country. The MP3 for Chapter 20 is HERE. Below is the text for Chapter 20, which needs to be completed before coming to class tomorrow. Also, you need to answer the following questions on a sheet of paper and bring to class on Wednesday: 1. The “N-word” can be a very complicated and uncomfortable topic to discuss. If you had to write a 3-5 sentence history of the existence and use of the word in America—without looking up anything—what would you say? 2. OK, even when we stick within the context of the book and pre-Civil War America, does it bother you to encounter the N-word so many times, over and over, within this novel? Explain why or why not? 3. You can’t have slavery in America if you don’t have the N-Word. Explore why that statement might be true. What purpose did the word serve for the South? Why was the n-word necessary for the South to “work” the way it did? 4. Now, discuss the presence of the N-word in modern America. How do you feel about the widespread use of the word today? Do you think it should be forever taken out of our language, or just accepted? How do you feel about the “rules” of who can and can’t use the word? How has the word changed in meaning and use over the years?
WELCOME BACK!!! If you missed class today, you need to watch the attached video clip. On a sheet of paper, identify 10 specific things that are different between it and the book. Then, identify 10 specific things that are the same between the two. These should be significant things--not trivial details. (Example: "Jim wasn't wearing a red turban in the book but he was in the video" is not a significant difference worth noting.) For tomorrow, you need to read Chapter 19 of the book. If you were not in class today to get a copy of it, one is attached below.
