Big day! Today we are finishing the book Monster in class. Pages 234-end. We will take a quiz TOMORROW and will also have a review session. A final 100 point test over the novel will be this Wednesday! (Bring a pencil to class.) Your character log must be finished by Wednesday! If you do not have internet access from home, plan on staying for ESS tomorrow to work on it. It MUST be completed on OneNote--no other format is accepted! For tomorrow, answer the following: Now that you have finished the book, what is your final personal opinion about Steve? Did he willingly participate in this robbery or didn’t he? Guilty as charged in court, or only guilty of associating with the wrong people? Your task is to write a thorough explanation proving one way or the other. You must use the book as your foundation. In ½ to 1 page, cite at least three specific references in the book (citing page numbers) while you prove your stance. For Wednesday, answer the following: Why does Steve choose MONSTER as the title of his screenplay? How is this a label that he carries and struggles with throughout the book? Connect this title with how Steve has an internal conflict of how he views himself, how others view him (at least 2 specific people), and what he has learned about prison and the people in there. Be sure to use specific references from the novel.
Today you are taking a quick quiz over pages 153-200 of Monster. After the quiz, you will get a copy of the book and complete the following: * Update the facts in your character log that is in your OneNote notebook. (If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then look at the Nov 7 blog post.) You need to write noteworthy facts--NOT random facts. (We don't care if Briggs was wearing a blue tie one day.) We have not finished the book, so obviously this does not have to be finished today, BUT IT SHOULD BE GETTING CLOSE, especially for characters like Wendell Bolden who are not seen in the book again. How many facts? Well, it varies by character, and here is your guide: Steve Harmon: 12 Sandra Petrocelli: 4 Kathy O’Brein: 4 James King: 5 Bobo Evans: 5 Osvaldo Cruz: 5 Lorelle Henry: 4 Jose Delgado: 4 Asa Briggs: 3 Mr. Sawicki: 4 Steve’s Mom: 3 Steve’s Dad: 3 Sal Zinzi: 3 Wendell Bolden: 3 Jerry: 3 Mr. Nesbitt: 3 Karyl and Williams: 3 * Next, you need to increase the font size and change the color of each character. As long as it looks reasonable, how you do that is up to you. * The words "Character List" at the top of your OneNote page should be bold font, a little bigger than it is now, and colored if you like. * You need to insert a photo for each character on the list. Obviously, since this is fictional, you won't find their real photos, so don't bother searching their names. Just find and insert a photo that you think looks like the character...based on facts stated in the book of course. I have posted a How-To below to help with this, if you need. You can right click and select copy to get the image, but within OneNote online version, you will probably have to paste the photo by hitting Ctrl and V at the same time. Please make sure your photos are appropriate and that they are somewhat close-ups of the people.
Do not worry about Nouns or Pronouns today/tomorrow! Today we are reading in class pages 153-200 in Monster. Quiz over that section on Thursday. If you have missed any of the quizzes over the book, you need to stay after school Monday or Tuesday.
Make sure that you have the first 3 pages of your pronoun packet completed by tomorrow, if you haven't already done so. Today we read through page 151 in Monster. If you were absent, here you go: Today we took a quiz (quick and easy) over nouns. If you missed today, you need to make this up before or after school TOMORROW! Otherwise, it will be averaged into your progress report as a zero. Also, you were given a Pronoun packet today. Just grab it tomorrow if you missed. (2nd period did not have time for the packet because of our assembly.) A few thing to remember: * A pronoun takes the place of a noun, group of nouns, or other pronouns. * Pronouns are our friends because they help us 1) Condense our writing, and 2) Add variety to our language. Our main focus is on the personal pronouns. Other types will be encountered, but we are not going to be defining all the sub-categories of pronouns. :-) The packet has a list of personal pronouns on the front. If you'd like a complete listing of all the pronouns out there, here ya go: Today you will finish reading through page 93 of Monster. We have a quick quiz over 47-93 to take. Then, you will get on the Chromebooks and complete the following assignment: Again, here is the list of characters to use:
Steve Harmon: Sandra Petrocelli: Kathy O’Brein: James King: Bobo Evans: Osvaldo Cruz: Lorelle Henry: Jose Delgado: Asa Briggs: Mr. Sawicki: Steve’s Mom: Steve’s Dad: Sal Zinzi: Wendell Bolden: Jerry: Mr. Nesbitt: Karyl and Williams: Today we are taking a quiz over the first section of the book Monster. If you are not in class today, you need to make up the quiz before or after school. We are reading pages 47-73. If you need the text, CLICK HERE. We also are going over the noun packets today that you turned in to Mr. Johnson last Friday. Your text: Today we finished reading through our first section of the book Monster.
